In My Cell, I can smoke!!!

Filed under: Thoughts, Health, Smoking — pmamania @ 8:51 pm

From an episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Chandler: So how does it feel knowing you’re about to die?
Joey: In 5 minutes my pain will be over. But you’ll have to live with the knowledge that you sent an honest man….to DIE.
Chandler: So…what do you want from me, Demon?…huh?
Joey: I just wanna go back to my cell. Cuz in my cell, I can smoke…
Chandler: Smoke Away!
*Joey takes a puff from the cigarette and there follows a series of gut wrenching coughs*
Chandler: I think this is why probably Demon smokes in his cell….ALONE!

Basically I have a couple of ‘friends’ who smoke, so I write this post in the face of a great deal of threat to my social life. lolz

A random scanning the internet brought me to the article where smoking was banned in Scotland. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3996587.stm
I have, for as long as I can remember, detested smoking. This probably had something to do with the fact that a few moments spent in the presence of a smoker ushered me into gut wrenching coughs.

I have to say I got major problems with smoking. Maybe this is primarily because, unlike other self destructing habits such as alcoholism or drug abuse, smoking is not just about self destruction; you widen the circle with it, endangering the lives of those around you and whether or not you are a victim of the habit. But then again I’m not in support of drug abuse or alchoholism either, and now don’t get me started on that. (I have people calling me a fundamentalist for this, but then I honestly don’t give a damn).

If you hang out with a smoker long enough, you might also get to spend some extra time together bonding…in the cancer ward of a hospital in the next couple of years. It is for this reason that I am completely in support of a ban of smoking in public. For the smokers who believe this is an erosion of their ‘civil liberties’, all I want to say is …you forget about the ‘minority’ of others whose right to fresh air and health is being encroached upon by you. We could do a lot better without the tobacco infested air we are encountered with everyday!

I, however am in support of the creation of small cubicles outside restaurants or theatres where these nicotine addicts can squeeze in and take a puff that will help them ‘escape’ from their load of troubles like a nagging wife at home, a dictatorial boss or a rather extravagant girlfriend; and help them get through the next hour.

It is scary that smoking is equated with being cool and that young teens are pushed into a world of nicotine addiction because of peer pressure. It is tragic that families continue to lose their children and children their parents because of the diseases caused by smoking. And it is horrifying to see the intricate and complex connections that exist between the tobacco industry and governments across the world. (Intricate and complex mean much less the same, but wth…I can’t find words to lay more emphasis).

One only hopes that smokers will now make the smarter choice… that of opting for fresher air to inhale, for the problems that smoking leads to, for them and others are not those that can be puffed away.

Anticipating a better world with fresher air, till next time,

Paras Mamania.

For all you Firefox lovers!!!

Filed under: Technology, Firefox — pmamania @ 3:10 pm

Speed up your firefox… Learn how to make firefox load faster.

The whole point of this is to speed up Firefox, and for me, it worked great. Normally when you first install Firefox, the loading time is slow, even for broadband. Remember, this is a hack for those broadband users. Sorry 56k’ers, you’ll have to sit this one out. Another great thing about this is that it takes only a few minutes to tweak your browser.
Tweaking the Browser

  • Step One: Altering

Open Firefox and type “about:config” into the address bar. Now, scroll down and search for the following entry: network.http.pipelining. Now, set the value to “true”. Next, search for network.http.proxy.pipelining and also set that to true. Then find network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set the value to whatever you want. The number you enter means the number of requests it will take at one time. Personally, 30 is what I use.

  • Step Two: Creating

Still in the about:config file, right-click. Now select New, and from New, select Integer. Name the new integer to nglayout.initialpaint.delay and put the value to “0″. This value is the time that Firefox waits before it acts apon the information it recieves.

Now, your browser should load much faster! Enjoy using Firefox and your broadband to it’s full potential.
How It Works

The altering and creating you did in the hack is very simple and is self-explanatory. The first three values you edited(network.http.pipelining, network.http.proxy.pipelining, and network.http.pipelining.maxrequests) have to deal with the requests would make at a time. When you enable pipelining, it allows Firefox to make more requests at once. Thus, speeding up page loading.

Then, the second step(nglayout.initialpaint.delay). As I hinted earlier, this value is the time that Firefox waits before it acts apon the information it recieves. By setting the value to “0″, it makes firefox wait “0″(milliseconds probably) before it starts acting on the information it just recived. In other terms, no waiting time.

Happy Diwali

Filed under: Diwali — pmamania @ 2:54 pm

Hi everybody, Here’s wishing everybody Happy Diwali and a prosperous Happy New year. :) . Sal Mubarak :D

Here’s an extract of how Diwali originiated and the story explained by an ABCD - Indian.

So, like this dude had, like, a big cool kingdom and people liked him.
But, like, his step mom, or somethin’, was kind of a bitch, and she forced
her husband to, like, you know, send this cool dude, he was Ram, to some national forest or reserve or somethin’.

Since he was going, for like, somethin’ like more than 10 years or so,
he decided to take his wife and his bro along. You know… so that they
could all chill out together. But dude, the forest was reeeeeeal scary shit,
really man, they had monkeys and devils and shit like that. But this
dude, Ram, kicked their ass with darts, bows and arrows, so it was fine. But then some bad gansta’ boys, some jerk called Ravan, picks up his babe (Sita) and lures her away to his hood. And boy, were our man, and his bro Lakshman, pissed! And you don’t piss this son-of-a-gunz ‘coz, he just kicks ass and like, all the gods were with him. So anyways, you don’t mess with gods.

So, Ram and his bro get an army of monkeys. Dude, don’t ask me how they trained the damn monkeys, just go along with me, OK. So, Ram, Lakhs, and their monkeys whip this gansta’s ass in his own hood. Anyways, by now, their time’s up in the forest and anyways, it gets kinda boring. You know no TVs or malls or shit like that. So, they decided to hitch back home.

His bro and the wife are back home. People thought, well, you know,
atleast they deserve somethin’ nice and they didn’t have any bars and clubs in those days. So they couldn’t take them out for a drink, so the people decided to smoke or shit. And they also had some lamps, they lit the lamps too.
So it was pretty cooool… you know with all those fireworks really,
they had some local band play along with the fireworks, and you know what, dude, that was the very first, no kidding, that was the very first
musical-synchronized fireworks. You know, like the 4th of the July
stuff, but just more cooler and stuff, you know. And, so dude, that was how, like, this festival started. Cool!!!

Diwali Rocks Maaaan!

Exams coming up and the Flu

Filed under: Studies, Flu, Exams — pmamania @ 11:41 am

I got hit by a flu two days back and have been in a state of total miserability and not wanting to do anything. This week is busy with an exam coming up and it is really tough to study with a running nose and my eyes watering and me coughing every 2 minutes. I feel like closing my eyes and go to sleep but alas no! have to study. Here’s wishing me a speedy recovery and good luck for my exams.
